Anna's Hummingbird
Calypte anna · Trochilidae (hummingbirds)

The hummingbird most likely at a feeder in town. Watch the male turn his head: the throat flashes from dark to brilliant rose-red.
ID Features
- Small hummingbird, about 4 inches long, with an iridescent bronze-green back, green flanks, and a pale gray chest and belly.
- Adult males have an iridescent rose-red crown and throat. It's the only North American hummingbird with a red crown. Out of direct sun, the red can look dull brown or gray.
- Females and young males have a green crown and a gray throat, sometimes with a few red feathers.
- Long, straight, slender bill.
- In display, males climb high and dive steeply, ending in a loud, explosive squeak made by the tail feathers.
Signals
- songA thin, squeaky, scratchy song mixed with buzzes and chirps, sung by males from a perch. Most North American hummingbirds don't sing. Listen (xeno-canto XC1072200)
